Cérna and her new shoes!

Two weeks ago, we received an urgent public help request of a dying horse. We'll never forget that when we saw the first pictures of her, we were almost certain that this horse is dead or would die within minutes.



Luckily we were wrong, and with a little help even she got back up on her feet at the sight and started grazing happily. This is due to the many people who joined forces together and helped her! Many thanks to them.



The clues there, however did not give us more happiness. This terribly thin, frail older horse probably been chucked out there in front of a horse-drawn carriage. When the wagon loaded with illegally obtained hay she could not pull it „home” and her exploited body collapsed and they simply left her to die.
We know nothing of her previous life, but we suspect that much attention, care and concern has not been given to her for a very long time.

The first and foremost thing to do was to find her a remote location in a comfortable and safe place mainly due to the risk of infectious anemia and other infectious diseases.
We have built a place for her which is currently satisfies all requirements, as she has a roof over her head and she has a modern feeder!



She received a special small lucky horseshoe pendent from Ági and Attila our regular volunteer workers.



The infectious anemia in horses is not a game, it is as dreaded disease like rabies in dogs, and since recently reared its head in several places in Hungary, so extra caution is required. Therefore, after the first life-saving interventions, as his condition stabilized, her blood was taken and sent to the laboratory for official examination and thankfully it came back negative! Thus, there is no obstacle to begin the active medical treatment.

The first and most important thing is dietary nutrient-rich feeding. That is not a big problem because Cérna lady is a great eater, she loves everything she gets. She is grazing all day long and she eats the special feed assembled for old horses but she can only get very little of it. Because of her good appetite you can see some positive changes in her appearance after only a few days.





Sadly she has a huge problem with her legs. Her hoofs were in horrible condition. The biggest problem is the right front foot where the ankle is completely deformed. Dr Zoltan Kerekes, veterinarian for horses came to do an x-ray of the foot. On the X-rays you can see the difference between good and bad hoof.








Unfortunately, this type of distortion can’t be cured. The solution can be a corrective surgery but because of her condition that can’t be done for a while. As to what caused the injury, we can only guess because it is no longer possible to find out. But anyway now we have to focus on the future. Yet something must be done about her hoof because in addition to being almost unable to move she is also in pain.



Since surgery is not possible for now the help comes in a form of a special oversized horseshoe. Zsolt Ormándi one of the most respected blacksmith came to give her a „Pedicure”. Zsolt was also at the site where Cérna was found and helped and without him it probably we would not have succeeded. So Zsolti came, opened his horse ambulance’s door and went to work.









Our old pony co-operated with patience and with all her strength, which she needed, plus a little extra support when she had to put her weight on her bad hoof to fix her other hoof on the other side.







She received a special long horseshoe which overhangs the hoof so it can help the ankle joint and prevent more sagging!



She was very patient through the shoeing and after that she was unsteady on her feet at first but she got use to it fast. The special horse shoe had to be adjusted once because it was a bit big and heavy for her tiny hoof and she "stepped out" of it. But now she is in less pain in the legs and can move better!



The next step is that she will get a chip and a horse passport will be made out for her when the official blood test results come back. In the meantime, we continue to search for people who new her and might provide some information about her. As we are sure that she didn’t get to this condition in couple of days and unfortunately, it is certain that the recovery will take a lot of time!
