Debi had the hernia surgery and doing fine
2012.06.12.
Debi has finally passed her long planned hernia surgery on May 17. The operation went well without any complications not counting an “interesting situation’ during anesthesia. After the surgery she spent another 5 days at the Large Animal Clinic in Üllő, monitored closely until her scar started to heal nicely and was transportable. The day has finally arrived and we could go pick her up. We organized her transport, with the “giraffe” namely its owner, Krisztián who is always willing to reduce his prices for us. Exactly at 3 we were there to pick Debi up.
We have received some last minute instructions from her doctor on how to remove the tampon sewn (!) onto her scar and that she’d have to wear a surgical belt for ten days that needs to be changed daily, plus ten days later the stitches would have to be removed. A nice little list of things to do especially if it has to be completed on a 600 kg horse that could simply kick us out of the world. But, luckily Debi is not that kind.
The horse transport started a little too adventurously because we forgot to take a lunge with us (we only left the halter at the clinic because the lunges disappear). No problem, we thought, those who transport horses must always gave these things on hand. But – Krisztián, since he has transported Debi before several times, knowing that there won’t be any problems has cleaned his car (giraffe), lunges included. Plan C would have been the always-present extra leash in the Noah’s car that was missing this time. In the end we asked the stable boy for a rope and we used that to fasten Debi in the carrier…
The way home was smooth and her friends were already waiting for Debi. But box imprisonment is box imprisonment therefore Debi (not making her too happy) was led into the nicely prepared box, filled freshly with wood chips where she’d spend the next 8 weeks. We are very grateful for the wood chip offers, it looks like we are well equipped for a while. The next day came the first change of bandage. Kinga helped me because it would be a mission impossible to bandage a huge animal like this by one person. To tell you the truth it was difficult for two, as well, as we found out. It’s really hard to hold the horse’s head by one hand while trying the pass the bandage with the other under the belly of the horse, holding it tight – and of course to take pictures all along.
You should know about Kinga that she is not a horse-person. Plus, Debi us not a little one. But against all odds Debi behaved like a model patient during the first bandaging and removing the tampon. She didn’t even move while Kinga messed around with her wound and rolled around the bandage. By the end love was all around them.
Debi’s wound heals very nicely btw, it’s completely dry and joined well. There had been a palm-sized edema on the bottom of her belly, but it disappeared in a few days. Flies make her very nervous because the area around the surgery has been completely saved and they tickle her tremendously there. She received a cover against flies but she must have disliked either the color or the cut but 3 day later, it was found in the box dragged under the wood shavings…
Debi’s bandages were changed diligently every day and finally the moment to remove the sutures arrived
Debi dealt with this really patiently she only told us during the last 2 stitches that she has had enough and we should leave her box immediately… The 2 months wait begins now. I have marked in my agenda when we need to go have a check before the first walk. We count the days out of which there are still too many left. According to the plans checkup takes place at the end of June and around July 12 she might leave her box.
Debi would really need some relaxing horse food that she might consume while in the box. Also a feeding bucket would be a nice addition to her comfort that could be hung up (that others use for races) because she breaks a simple bucket every second day if she receives her food in those. We still need a new halter (size XFULL).
And then let us mention the compulsory but key question for us, asking you to contribute to the surgery and the healing process:
Debi’s surgery and rehabilitation cost more than 300.000 HUF, the special care and the foods were also very costly. You have already helped us a lot and we are very grateful for that but unfortunately, not even half of the necessary amount has been covered. Every single forint counts, therefore we ask you to contribute to Debi’s healing with even the smallest amount. Bank account no.: OTP 11710002-20083777
