The Noe herd in Heaven has expanded. Fare well Picinyem!
2011.07.08.
The animal shelter residents woke up to tragedy on Monday morning. One of our horses, Telivér (the original name was Picinyem) lay helplessy on the ground, caught between the fence and the poles. On the floor was blood, but not too much. It was necessary to act immediately, we spoke with the vet on mobile phone. He sad when we not saw broken or other injuries, we could remove the horse from between the poles. We began to act immediately. In minutes emerged the cutting force, and the horse was freed, but the trouble seemed to be bigger than we thought because the horse was unconscious and he fell to his side helplessly.
Our vet was on the way to us, but he was on the other side of the city so we learned that it would take an hour for him to get here. In the meantime we were on the phone with him and he was giving instructions to give the horse a large dose of painkillers and one liter infusion. – we didn’t dare to give him more because the possible diagnoses included cerebral edema. In which case, a large amount of liquid would have only worsened the situation. Unfortunately, a closer examination results showed a very poor prognosis. The horse’s body temperature was 34.5 Celsius be called normal in horse body heat is 38. Circulation was very poor, weak pulse, breathing is shallow and irregular. He was unconsious, every 20-30 minutes he had cramps which lasted a couple of seconds. During the cramps his feet moved so the spinal cord injury was minimal, the most likely diagnosis remaind cerebral edema.
The possibility to take him to the stable was not an option because we were afraid that this would only cause more damage, we tried to keep him safe at the seen. We put pillows and thick blankets under his head in order to protect his eyes from being hurt. We covered him with blankets so his body temperature could rise. Shielded his head with umbrellas. There were a handful of people at the seen and when her seizures came they jumped on him at once and held him down so he wouldn't hurt himself.
We must mention about Telivér that he had epilepsy – it is very rare in horses, due to the size of horses it is almost impossible to examine with available medical equipment so the treatment is difficult. Minor attacks have been seen. However, the attacks were not very intense and were short. But you can imagine that these seizures can be very dangerous when such a massive body falls to the ground and shakes the horse.
Possibily the horse seizure during the night. There were only minor injuries on his body so we thought, he bumped his head an fell unconscious in which we found him in the morning. Our vet has given him a big dosis of steroids and we had hoped that would bring down the edema before it gives such a pressure on the organs that they stop functioning. Plus he received painkillers and medication so he could breath easier. The painkillers were given as prevention because the horse was still unconscious.
By now the seizures came frequently so we tried to stop his body shaking but he kept moving away. We put big bags of dogfood behind his back - you must be creative in emergency situations.
The hours passed, but condition of Picinyem did not change much – body temperatures went up. But only 35.7. Which is still low. Especially the day was hot and the horse was wraped in blankets. The horse circulation and respiration was somethimes worse somtimes better. As the hours went by it became worse. The seizures came in every 20-30 minutes and as the hours passed the horse’s chances decreased rapidly. He begun to show symptoms of dehydration, somethimes he neighed to someone. Deep down in our souls we knew, that we shall loose this battle.
Late afternoon our vet made us decide. If we insist, we can probably keep up this condition during the night with medications. Keep up the horse’s temperature with heating pillow, but that is about it. He said that we shouldn’t let Picinyem suffer anymore. There was no othe option and we knew that too, so we let him go. Telivér did not feel a thing. Quietly he left us, and his inseparable partner (Öszvér) too.
The Noé Herd in heaven has expanded again. Goodbye Picinyem.
