Doglog 17-23.05.2010
2010.05.24.
Again, we had a hell of a weather this week. Continuous, heavy rains made it difficult to work in the shelter. The animal traffic was heavy as always, and unfortunately the number of newcomers was higher than the number of those who found a new owner. But, above all, the greatest news of the week is that Nanuk, the old dog that recently had a stroke, is up and running and annoys us again with his barking!
Monday, 17 May
The week began with a „doggie-bag” left at the gate of the shelter. A doggie-bag, literally: we found three scared little puppies inside the box. They were christened as the Eső (Rain) family.
Pocak, the Labrador we found last week, is home again with his original owner. As we were told, he frequently runs away from home, and even had an accident one time when he roamed on the street. We equipped him with a chip and the owners promised that they will take better care of him in the future.
A young crow was taken to the shelter as well – we didn't know that he would be the first of the many-many birds that arrived this week.
Monthy and Szemőke suffered a lot from the bad weather; we had to take them to the vet.
Our animal rescue car was headed to pick up an injured cat, but on the way the driver saw another cat sitting beside the road, in a very bad condition – so both cats were brought to us. The latter was christened Malév; he is a Siamease male that must have seen better times. He has kidney failure and out vets didn't see much hope for his recovery, but we agreed to give the cat 48 hours and started his intensive care.
The other cat was named Liszka. She is a black-and-white female that lived abandoned on a street. One week ago one of the locals saw that the cat is very ill, she was lethargic and saliva was dripping from her mouth. We took her to the vet immediately, and to our great surprise, her tests proved negative. The quick medication and infusion helped, and now it's only her horribly bad teeth that make us a little bit concerned.
Tuesday, 18 May
Malév and Liszka, as well as Szemőke and Monthy continue with their medication. Szemőke is a little bit better but she still cannot stand up. Now it's clear that Monthy has a serious liver problem.
Liszka behaves as if she was a different cat. She purrs, wants caress and scratching, which means that her treatment can continue in the shelter and she can leave the animal hospital. Unfortunately, Malév is still in a pretty bad shape – but we still hope he will pull himself together.
Four new crow chicks arrived. They are cared after by a temporary adopter.
Wednesday, 19 May
This was a black day in the shelter's life. Our beloved dog, Foxi died of babesiosis, Malév gave up the fight for his life, and the dog Írisz also left us forever. We hope they are happy on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge...
We took in an injured roe deer that was chased by dogs and got stuck on the top of a fence.
Monthy's ultrasonographic examination proved that he has a serious liver failure. As the liver usually regenerates easily under normal conditions, this is very bad news: Monthy's liver seems unable to recover despite the medication. From now on he can only consume a special type of dog food prepared especially for animals with liver problems.
Kunbaracsi Szendi or Kunbi was brought back to us after 7 months with a new family. The reason: the dog is „not happy”... Kunbi is a very timid, shy little dog; her socialization took several months, and her past temporary adopter, Little Cathy worked hard to make her trust in people. Her adopters were aware of her background when they took her home, but were willing to meet the challange. On the annual meeting of the adopters, 18 April this year, the dog followed the new family and not Little Cathy anymore – she started to get attached to her new owners, and we saw that she trusted again. We were very happy – but it seems the chickens were counted before they were hedged...
Kunbi is devastated by her loss. She is still waiting for her owners to take her HOME, as this must be a fatal misunderstanding. Little Cathy took her again, but the dog is continuously looking for the members of her past family. This is really tragic – even a self-confident dog can get depressed when abandoned and rejected, let alone such a shy and tremulous creature as Kunbi. Anyway, we hope there will be others who can show her that she is worthy of love and care till the end of her life.
Thursday, 20 May
Two new dogs arrived, we christened them Habarcs (Mortar) and Rántás (Hitch). They were confiscated in Gyál, along with 15 other animals. Although there is no free room in the shelter, we couldn't reject these two dogs, as they were pregnant. Unfortunately, as they were in a horrible condition, we had to neuter them. They are very timid, practically wild, a lot of time and patience will be necessary to rehabilitate them.
As the roe deer was not seriously injured, we asked for help from the game warden of a wildlife reservoir, and set him free. A detailed report will be posted about the event, now let's see some pictures:
Due to the storms a lot of birds arrived: a young pidgeon, a great tit and a green woodpecker. They are housed by temporary adopters.
Friday, 21 May
The day begun with a dog that had an accident. She was found in the 18th district; as it turned out, she was attacked by other dogs. She is now under medical treatment, and we are looking for her original owner!
Szivar (Cigar), the old raccoon is sick, so we took him to the vet, Unfortunately, it seems that his old age is the root of the problem...
Evita found a new home; from now on, she shares a home with a guard dog in the 16th district. We told the new owner that Evita is everything but a watch dog, and the worst thing she would do with a burglar is to lick his face, but the new owner was confident. Evita's new friend, Folti is a real watch dog, as hard as nails, and is pretty lonely since Evita's forerunner died at the age of 16. It seems Evita doesn't have to guard anything, just entertain her new family.
At the end of the day we had a meeting with the children of the Kerekerdő Kindergarten, where our dog Rea and the goat Windows enjoyed the children's attention.
22 May, Saturday
Kacaj (Laughter), a young Dachshund mixed breed was found in Kóka. He is very thin and his body is covered with wounds. Now he is in our hospital.
We have already written about the dog Fibi. She is much better now and can leave the hospital. It would be best if she could spend the months of her recovery at a family, so now we are looking for a temporary adopter for her! Fibi is very friendly with other dogs and all animals. We would like to find her a place where she could spend most of the time in the garden but had access to the house as well, and from where she could regularly visit the vet who treats her.
A female member of the Sopszka family found a new home:
A cat was also adopted today as Courage, the temporary adopter of Boróka, decided to keep her for life. The little cat Alex moved to a new home as well. We are very grateful to Viki who cared for the small kittens that were left at our gate. We wish a very happy family life to all of them!
Tom, the cat also might find a home in the near future.
Some of our volunteers represented the animal shelter at an event in Budaörs. They took a huge number of animals with them, and the performance met great success. Thank you for inviting us!
Our three-legged ex-resident, Helga visited us. We were happy to see that her owners love her very much.
Sunday, 23 May
Beton, Babett and Blanka moved to their new homes. We hope everything is going to be all right with them!
A sad incident made us bitter this day: a young couple came to us with a ca. 1 month-old cat which they found beside the road, and they wanted to give him to us. We sad that we will take the cat in, but we cannot take him immediately, they have to wait one or two weeks as all of our temporary adopters are busy with other animals right now, and such a young animal cannot be housed safely in the shelter due to the high risks of infection.
They sad they were not willing to keep the cat, not even to ask their relatives and friends if anyone cold keep the animal for a few days – they rescued him and we should help, as this is our task. Such quarrells always hurt us – we are working very hard to help as many animals as possible, but the walls of the shelter are not made of rubber and are not flexible. Sometimes we have to ask for a little patience until we can organize the housing of an animal. The couple, unfortunately, was not cooperative at all, so they put the cat on the cover of a bin and left. They were convinced that their conscious is clear as a bell – they „rescued” the cat, right?
After long hours of phone calls we found someone who was willing to take care of the cat – and now it seems she will even keep him forever. So the story has a happy ending after all, but still we ask for everyone who would like to „rescue” an animal in such a way, to be a little bit more patient! We are trying everything we can, but sometimes we can't help immediately. A lot of sick animals live in the shelter, and letting such young, not yet vaccinated puppies in the animal home would be their death sentence! It's not a big deal to find half a square meter for a cage where a small animal can be housed - but it's pretty difficult to do it in a responsible way!
Some news about our ex-residents:
Suzy is much loved and appreciated by her owners, even though she likes to spend some time in the neighbour's garden.
Olajos Lajos is enjoying life!
Sunny the dog found a dream home:
The owner of Bodza of the Auchan family wrote us a letter:
„Hi there!
I though you'd be happy to see some pics of Bodza – the fat little doggie turned into a beautiful dog lady! She is not even white anymore, I have no idea what I should write in the „color” section in her ID book...
She is a very clever, intelligent dog. She has lots of friends, and every weekend we take her to an excursion. She is not timid at all, and if I call, she comes back even when she's in the middle of a playfight; she is not running away, even though she loves to make new acquaintances, no matter if it's a man or a dog. It took a long way to achieve all this, she tried to revolt several times, but now despite that she's a teenager, she's a reliable, good dog. And what a wonderful dog she will be when she grows up! :)
All the best,
Attila Szlávik”
And some news about the cat Dior:
„Dear volunteers at the Noah's Ark Animal Shelter!
We adopted Dior 18 March. I'm happy to let you know that she has been absolutely healthy since then, and enjoys her new home. She received the last series of vaccinations. She loves to eat, the vet said she was a little bit overweight when we adopted her, so now we are trying to cut back on her food a bit.
I send some pictures of her.
Best wishes,
Balázs Gelsei”
And last but not least, let's see some scenes from the shelter's everyday life:
