Dog rescue action in Dabas
2010.03.27.
26 March 2010 the Local Veterinary Inspector of Dabas called our shelter, asking for help concerning ca. 30-40 dogs that were kept under horrible circumstances, without any food or water. The dogs were confiscated by the police, their housing and veterinary treatment is now taken care of by the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter. The location of the owner of the plot on which the animals were kept is unkown. He had violated the animal welfare act several times during the previous years. He is charged with cruelty to animals and is prohibited from all forms of animal keeping in the area of Dabas town.
The owner of the plot, who is not at all unknown for the Local Veterinary Inspector and the staff of our shelter, couldn’t be reached. He had been charged several times with cruelty to animals and illegal dogbreeding, and quite a few animals had been confiscated from him in the past. The last incident that gained some publicity happened in November 2007 in Újlengyel, where he kept dogs under unspeakable circumstances. The animals were then confiscated, and some of them ended up in the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter. Our staff was shocked to experience the conditions under which those animals were living and to see the mass graves of dogs. The lawsuit that started in 2009 still hasn’t been settled as the court postponed the official formulation of indictment.
The images taken during the 2007 rescue operation can be viewed: here.
The owner of the Dabas farmyard has been in the focus of the authorities’ attention for a while. He often changes residence and collects stray dogs in the area, without providing them with the necessary housing, nourishment and medical care. We kindly ask all dog owners who have lost their pets recently to revise the photos taken by our staff – hopefully your pet will be among the rescued animals.
The Local Veterinary Inspector, Miklós Kiss told us: the owner of the plot in question started to run another illegal dogbreeding facility and kept ca. 30 dogs. He had no permission for his activity. The animals were kept without food, with minimal and dirty water, and were sleeping in their own feaces. Some of them were shut up in a cellar and bred among themselves without human control. Many of them needed immediate veterinary treatment. Some of them had serious bitemarks, typical injuries of “pack keeping”. Others came out of the cellar with skin infections, thin and weak.
As a result of irresponsible breeding, a one-year-old female suckled her two or three day-old puppies in a wardrobe; in a doghouse another female nursed her babies. Many of the females were pregnant. There were dogs among them that were so horrified of people that a whole group of volunteers was needed to catch them.
The police realized that the circumstances as well as the condition of the animals made the confiscation necessary and justified. At the same time, the notary of Dabas town prohibited the farmyard’s owner from all kinds of animal keeping. The Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter took up the task of housing the dogs. It is clear that they are not used to human presence, they are either agressive or frightened of people. Many of them are incredibly thin and suffer from infectious diseases. Our volunteers immediately started their rehabilitation. During the registration process it turned out that some of the dogs were chipped; we are looking for their owners.
All the dogs that we took in are now chipped. It is our task to take care of the dogs until the legal procedure is settled. We are very grateful to our temporary adopters who were willing to house one or two of these unfortunate creatures. One dog was taken in by the Futrinka Animal Welfare Society, and a German shepherd female was housed by the German Shepherd Rescue Foundation.
A short report was aired about this rescue operation on the RTL Club televison channel:

Until the legal procedure is settled, the animals are treated as evidence and they are under the care of the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter.
We’ll report any development in the case.
