Doglog 30. jan. 2010.
2010.02.01.

A lot of things happened last week. Luckily, these were rather good than bad news.
Let’s see what happened in the animal shelter!

New dogs under our care:
Mokány (Sturdy) was hit by a car on the M0 highway at the exit near Dunaharaszti. His right hind leg is in pain but hopefully he will quickly recover at his new temporary adopter. As his name shows he is a strong little dog.

Sanyi was found in a bush in Csévharaszt by a devoted animal lover. He is on good terms with other dogs, however, there is much left to be desired regarding his behaviour while on leash. Most probably he is a Havanese – Hungarian „puli” mix , based on his look and personality.

Réka was found in the 10th district on the side of a busy road. She is in a good condition, totally calm and balanced, a very nice dog. We are going to look for her original owner for another two weeks at least.

Suzy got into our animal home from the waiting list. Her previous owner is not able to care for her anymore due to family reasons. She has been living in a flat until now, but at the moment there is no free kennel indoors. She is very kind with people but cannot stand cats. Hopefully we will find a temporary adopter for her very soon, someone who can help her forget the loss of her previous family.

The members of the „Dobozos” dog-family were in a bad shape at the beginning of the week. We suspected that something was wrong so we took them to the vet as soon as possible, but we lost one of the puppies despite all efforts. Now it seems that the other puppies are healthy and sound but the „puppy crisis” is not over yet. (You can read more about the problem of housing puppies here.)

Not only the housing of puppies, but also the sheltering of injured animals causes serious problems. In our medical room, which is suitable for 5 dogs only, now 15 dogs are accomodated, and the situation is almost impossible to handle. Unfortunately, three of our sick dogs, Szilveszter, Hetti and Próba Sapka were so weak that they had to stay in the medical room in spite of the danger of infections, and Próba Sapka could not be saved. It's a shame that only such a short time was given to this little puppy. :(

Pribék (Henchman) found a new owner; he will enjoy the company of another dog from now on. His adopters promised to take photos of him. He will have a large free area where he can run and play to his heart's content.

Franny and Zooey, the bunnies were adopted by a gentleman who had visited them for weeks before adoption.

On Monday morning Gulliver visited us. We could hardly recognise him as he had put on some weight, was calm and had learned how to walk on a leash without problems. It was really nice to see him again; his owners promised to visit us more often.

Some of our devoted supporters surprised us: one of them donated medicines for our sick dogs, another one supplied our cats with food and the animal shelter with a new mobile phone. Lászlóné Kozák, or aunt Lenke, donated the lion share of the money she had won in the quiz show „Who wants to be a millionaire?” to the animal shelter. Many thanks to all of them!

One of the best news of the week was that Pletyka (Gossip), the three-legged cat found a new owner, even though it was thought to be almost impossible to give her to adoption. We already got some news of her on Sunday, with photos; read her story here. Hopefully, there will be many good news about Gossip, that is, gossiping!

You can read about the cat Metallica a here.

Boróka (Juniper) the cat spent her quarantine time with a member of our Supporters' Club, after which she was housed in a kennel in the shelter. Then, from one second to the other, she became blind; the veterinarians still have no idea what could have happened. After long discussions we decided that it would be the best for the cat to move back to his temporary adopter. She is under medical supervision. Please keep your fingers crossed for this black beauty!

We moved Karácsony (Christmas) the cat to a kennel in order to gain some free space for new animals in the quarantine room; however, she does not seem to enjoy her new home. It is not surprising that she is cold, even though the cats' kennels are as much insulated as possible, so we look for a temporary adopter, or even better, a new owner for her.

Those who follow the news of our Horse Rescue Project, may know the story of our horse Álmos. For almost a whole year we have been fighting a serious hoof inflammation with the help of our vets, Omar Ratkóczi and Zoltán Kerekes and our blacksmith, István Mészáros. Now it seems that the breakthrough has finally come.

Our new, exciting game, Noah's Caching starts this week; read about the game here!

New residents of our Mini Shelter:

Patchwork was rescued without delay from the dogcatcher of Dunavecse, as she suffers from uterus inflammation. Kópia was fed for weeks by an animal lover in Gyál. Both animals were weak; now they are in a much better general condition. They are in a good mood and get on with other animals well.

Good news from the Boxer Rescue Team: their new home page is now up and running!

Our Bulldog Rescue Team has been active for a whole year now, so they celebrate their first anniversary.

Again, we are looking for volunteers for „Pigeon Post”!

About 2000 letters are waiting to be posted to our previous adopters and supporters, however, we don't have the necessary financial resources to pay the costs of posting. The letters were printed, put into envelopes and addressed by volunteers (many thanks to all of them!), and now we are looking for enthusiastic supporters who would be willing to post some of the letters on their own costs.
In case you work for a company that might sponsor the posting of some of these letters, please send an e-mail to almakata@gmail.com ! (One envelope contains 2 sheets of A4 size, it can be posted with normal charge.)
Thank you!

And finally, here are some pictures from the gallery „Winter in the Animal Shelter”!
