We had another ultrasound day, again with a full car - 6 animals - we went to Dr. Dalma Péterfia, heartworm specialist and cardiologist of the Noah Animal Shelter Foundation.
Well, we've had better rounds... Unfortunately, we received some not so good news about our protegés.
#Rajmund, our grey beauty, came in for a check-up, because a few months ago the doctor found such a severe heartworm infection and the brutal cardiological damage that came with it that he had to take heart medication, he has been on a 30-day course of Doxycycline, but so far no surgery has been considered, and probably the source of his hair and skin problems is heartworm. Her vitals have improved a little, we can try a neutering surgery with a special anaesthetic protocol and it would be good to get a histological sample of her skin.
Csárdás, the little black dog, although he looks very young, already has an awful lot of heartworms, unfortunately close to his heart and cardiac abnormalities are already showing. Complex medication will follow and we will fight the parasites with alternative so-called doxy-moxy therapy.
German,a German Shepherd type dog, is not a young dog, known to be 9 years old. In fact, he needs immediate heartworm removal surgery as his infestation is so severe. At the moment anaesthesia is out of the question for him , he needs heart medication, steroids and doxycycline. He will need to be taken for another cardiac ultrasound in a few months.
Abigail the English bulldog is in the best condition, with no parasites visible in the area seen by the echocardiogram. But the 2nd test also shows a severe infection, and the blood is teeming with heartworm larvae, the microfilariae. We fight them with alternative doxy-moxy therapy.
Gilbert's French bulldog already shows adult heartworms in the evening close to the heart, fortunately not in large numbers, but this is a more advanced stage of infection.
Camilla went for a cardiological examination because of a severe heart murmur. Because of this, her neutering surgery was cancelled last week. Dr Dalma found a congenital aortic stenosis, and in addition to an ultrasound of her heart, she also underwent a blood pressure measurement. This problem will need to be checked regularly in the future. She will be put under a gentle anaesthetic protocol, which is necessary as Camilla is pregnant and needs to undergo surgery as soon as possible.
Today's 6 animal examinations, echocardiograms, microscopic examinations, test and blood pressure measurement, cost more than 130.000Ft and this is "only" to diagnose the problem.
