Spring summary – Debi’s recovery and new meadows
2013.08.07.

You might remember that our horse, Debi had an accident at the end of the winter and she hurt one of her back legs seriously.
Debi’s leg needed a bandage and other treatment for a month. Bandaging became a daily routine for both Debi and I, so she realised that when I had appeared with my yellow box it had also meant some snack for her too.
However, sometimes it happened that I had forgotten to take everything with me, so I had to hurry back, leaving Debi behind. When I returned, this was what I saw:

Although Debi has bad eyesight but she can see enough to be able to open a knot and spill out everything (the bandage in the water) to find some snack. She was unfortunate enough to spill the snack out of her place.

So somehow I decided not to give any snack to her on that day….
She could only walk 10 minutes per day and she had to stay in the stable, consequently she started to cough seriously due to the dust.
Unfortunately, we calculated with this since after her operation last year she had the same problem. While she was staying in the stable she was given tea but later she needed steroids for her cough so the vet decided to let her out for a walk during the day.
All right, but where can we let her out? It is impossible to let her go with the stud because of her poor eyesight. The consequence would be another accident. All right then, let’s prepare another pen for her. But where??
Finally, we decided to fence the green area in front of the shelter since the grass was lovely there thanks to the lot of rain.

Later on, we found out to let Diana, Barbie, Birs and Tündér Palkó join Debi in the new meadow.

Well, Pali decided not to join the girls because having realised that he could visit the neighbour’s horse since the electric fence was not electric any more (later about this), he wanted to dominate over the neighbour’s horse so he went back to the stud.
Since Debi’s leg was recovering nicely, it didn’t need the bandage during the day. On the day of control at the vet, doc Kerekes was very happy to see Debi’s leg. The wound looked better than expected. So finally we could give up bandaging. It was 100 % recovery at that time but the wound was almost closed. It seems that later we will need a small medical intervention but we are on the right way now.

We started to create a new meadow for the big stud behind the shelter along the acacia grove. There is a big green area with grass but half of the area is bushy, full of trees and nettles …

We had been destroying trees and bushes, sawing and slicing, putting down posts and pulling out wires for a week.

We had collected thousands of thorns and nettle-stings until we finished but finally our horses could use their new meadow.

Since this region is not flat, there are small ditches and slopes, the two awkward horses, Diana and Birs could not come to that place. They stayed with Debi in the front. Later on, Barbie was taken to the back meadow (for great happiness of Palika), since she caused troubles every morning and evening when she was led out to the front meadow.

Who were the happiest with the ditches and slopes? Carmen and Menthol. Interestingly, Carmen loves going up and down with her broken leg, she uses her hurt leg as a crunch very nicely and we think that she is very proud of being a mountain climber! She manages to use the steps and to overstep poles.

Well, Menthol was happy with the ditches because they ensure a very good view for him … under Carmen.

Since the whole “managing board” was cleared off the stud, we are expecting the new leader. Last time I was very surprised to see Amálka at the beginning of the stud when they were coming and going back. Do the lasts become the firsts?
Well, our two healthy emasculated, Basa and Kölyök, who were always problematic with their aggressive behaviour, moved to a temporary owner into a close riding-hall where they can use their extra energy for useful things.
Back to the electric fence: We had many of these devices but they stop working one after another. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. We would definitely need another device, being used is not a problem if it works. Unfortunately, a new device costs more than ten thousand forints which we cannot provide at the moment.

Moreover, we would need electric fence wires (4 cm wide is used). The more wires we have the more meadows we can fence or even repair in case it brakes. If anyone has got an unnecessary device, please contact via e-mail lomentes@noeallatotthon.hu.

We have already mentioned that last year the price of hay grew very much due to the dry weather. This year the situation seems more fortunate. Everybody is mowing in the neighbourhood so we received much hay for the horses. This project was so successful that we had been laying, drying and turning the wet grass for days.
