April 22th, Earth Day
2013.04.22.

Today is April 22th, the Earth Day. Though we live all our days in the spirit of protecting Earth, respecting nature and protecting animals, we decided to dedicate some lines to this international event.

All started in 1970
The first Earth Day was the initiative of Denis Hayes, an American university student and on that day 25 Americans raised their voices for nature. This historic event brought about important changes within and out of the US borders: new legislations were introduced to ensure the protection air and waters, environmental organizations were established and millions switched to a more eco-conscious life style.

In 1990 Earth Day goes worldwide
Twenty years after Denis Hayes and his friends, seeing the signs of an emerging ecologic crisis – the dying of the biosphere, industrial pollution, massive rainforest destruction, expansion of deserts, the green house effect, ozone depletion, biohazardous waste, overpopulation, acid rains, the pollution of oceans, and many more – urged and called to action by declaring the 1990s the decade of the environment.
Meanwhile Denis Hayes and his friends established in 1989 the Earths Day Network and launched monthly enews to all over the world to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 all around the globe with various actions from mass demonstrations to open universities, from tree planting to organizing recycling programs. More than 200 million eco-conscious people, NGOs, local schools, municipals, environmental groups from 140 countries joined action with programs to celebrate Earth Day on a global level as well.

Hungary joins among the firsts

Hungarian environmental activists established the Earth Day Foundation and a new center as well to coordinate events related to the first Hungarian Earth Day – they call was answered by a number of communities, from small villages to large cities. The foundation supported these activities, while emphasizing the importance of schools and teachers, with topic-related books, school competitions. (source: www.fina.hu)

Noah also takes its fair share of Earth Day activities: every year we launch our tree planting campaign – this year we also celebrate this way. So, take action and bring a tree or bush or plant this year! What we recommend: rivet, apple tree, quince, pear, cherry, sour cherry, mulberry, raspberry, oak, poplar, ashen, ivy, blackthorn, or any bird-friendly plant. BUT please do not bring yew as it is poisonous to animals. (source: day. hu)

You can plant your green yourself, just join us for our Saturday open day, please bring a shovel and other tools, because we are poorly equipped.

Thanks and let’s think of Earth today a bit more – all small things count in fighting for the next generations. It’s all about our choices.
