Füstös is a young ’puli’ style male dog who was found on road nr.4 where he was pulling himself on his two front legs.
Every time when an injured dog is found our Shelter takes them over and this is what happened this time as well. As he was not able to stand on his two back legs, we took him to the vet right away where we learnt that his injury wasn’t new at all, according to the muscle atrophy his injury might have been several weeks maybe months old. The X-Ray didn’t show broken bones but there is seen a small shadow at the lumbar vertebras. Unfortunately it didn’t help us to understand the problem because there are several things that cause this kind of shadows: complications of an old bacterial infection, a tumor, etc.
Füstös’s legs are not entirely paralyzed, he can feel pain, he is able to move them a little bit but he has a so called ’rigid paralysis’. He can hold his urine and poop, actually he is the most housebroken dog of our ambulance.
His joy of life – well that’s amazing. Actually it’s too good. When he is out there in the farmyard, he is EVERYWHERE. He is teeming, talking, always under feet, wants a stroke, comments on everything, he has a word for everybody, his mouth never stops not for a moment, his tail is always moving and in the meantime he is pulling himself around in the area of the Shelter like a seal.

Most of the time he makes people confused because one should feel sorry for a poor paralyzed dog, should give a pitiful stroke, say a few nice words – but Smoky doesn’t give a chance for that. In one hand it’s damn difficult to feel sorry for a dog who is obviously very happy and in the other hand people do not even have time to stroke him as he is always busy with talking to a duck on the other side of the Shelter and he can’t even hear our nice words from his happy ( and very loud) barking.
To be honest Smoky is a phenomenon. A bit grating, a bit hyperactive phenomenon but this is why we love him so much. However, he is a very cooperative and managable dog. We change his bindings once in every two days – it is necessary because while he’s pulling himself around, his legs would be sore. In the meantime he doesn’t say a word, actually by now he enjoys the exercises we make him to do while changing. He is a housebroken, nice and lively dog.
Although he is happy but we want to do our best so he can show us how it looks like when he is dancing us around using all his legs. Smoky is having serious examinations because at the moment we don’t have an exact diagnosis about the cause of him beind paralyzed. One of these examinations is a very serious and expensive one, the CT scan.
