Doglog 21-27.02.2011.
2011.02.28.

Unfortunately another old friend departed this week... Szivar (Cigar) the 15 year-old racoon crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Be happy and healthy on the other side, old friend, and have fun with your pal, Monty!
Szivar was born in 1996, and came to our shelter in 2003. He was kept in a tiny little cage in a pet shop, but the locals of the street were so sorry for him that they were willing to buy him and gave him to our shelter. Szivar and our other racoon, Monty, lived happily in the animal home, until Monty died in 2009. After his death Pepe, a skunk joined Szivar and kept him company.
For several weeks we have seen that Szivar is weak. He lost weight and was hardly able to move, so he spent most of the winter in the animal hospital. And now he left us forever.

This week a number of injured dogs came under our care. Luckily we have some happy news for this week as well, as two dogs found their original owners after spending a few days on the stret and in the shelter.

Jared is a ca. 1 year-old male found in District 17. He was hit by a car at the crossroads of Naplas Road and Cinkotai Road. The driver who hit him asked for our help and has kept contact since then. Even though he even though about adopting the unlucky dog, it seems that Jared is not yet ready to move to a new home. We wish there were more people with such a responsible and positive attitude!
The veterinary examination showed that Jared suffered no serious injuries. He is young and not socialized, and has a lot to learn. Unfortunately, he tends to be agressive not only with other dogs but in certain situations also with people, so he is looking for an experienced, calm and patient owner who can handle him. Due to his young age he can probably be re-socialized with time.

Kendő (Scarf) is a 8-9 month-old female who was hit by a car at Albertirsa. Her right front and hind leg broke and she underwent a long surgery. Now a long rehabilitation programme is waiting for her. She is friendly with people, tries to make friends despite the pain. She is not on good terms with all other dogs but due to her young age this problem can be handled. Now we are looking for a temporary adopter for her who could help with her healing and socializing.

Crowley is a 1 year-old bullterrier and Jack Russel terrier mixed breed male, who was hit by a car in Ceglédbercel. His right hind leg and pelvis broke. He also underwent a complicated surgery. He will shortly move to a temporary adopter family, who will take care of him until he fully recovers.

The costs of veterinary care were very high this week due to these three injured animals; their surgery costs added up to 200,000 HUF. Please support their treatment if you can, so that we can help and treat other animals as well.

Lakatos (Locksmith) is a 2-3 year-old labrador retriever male. He was found in District 17, Újlak Street as he was roaming aimlessly. He was quite apathetic after he was brought to the shelter and we couldn’t find a way to cheer him up. Luckily, his owners turned up a few days later and then Lakatos showed his happy side! It goes without saying that he received a microchip so now he will find his way home more easily in case he gets lost again.

Alent is 12 year-old malamute female. She fell into a ditch in District 17 and was unable to crawl out. She was also lucky – even though she had no microchip either, her owners were able to find her and took her home after a few days spent in the animal home.

Farkas, the husky mixed breed who was found in Sülysáp at the train station, now found a new owner!

Lea, who was tied to the shelter’s gates, found a permanent owner as well: her temporary adopter decided to keep her for life.

A family simply fell in love with our black beauty, Majré (Creeps). They visited him several times and were not scared away by his timid character. They believe that with time, this puppy will be able to trust people again. He found his place easily in the dog company of the shelter – we hope that now he will be lucky with people as well!

Behemót (Hulk), the huge yorkie behaved well during his probation period, so now he can stay with his new family.

Emy the golden retriever female also found a new home. Her new family visited her several times, and the parents and children made the decision together to adopt this beauty.

Samu, who came under our care last summer, has a new owner as well. It’s a shame this wonderful little creature had to spend more than half a year in the animal home, but at last he has a family on his own!

Those who visit the shelter on a regular basis, know our lovable little Bridge and her unmistakable performance: it is enough to look at her and she rolls on her back right away, waiting for the scratch! We are happy to announce that Bridge found a family and now has her own scratching staff! We will miss her a lot and hope we will hear good news from her in the future!

The ferret Vadu was also adopted. His adopting family already has two rescued ferrets, Tipi and Topi.

The cat rescue team had a lot to do this week – as usual... It’s good news that our supporters made generous donations to help Öcsike (Little Brother), the cat who needed a jaw surgery. We are very grateful to everyone who keeps an eye on Öcsike! He had a multiple jaw fracture and has to undergo a complicated series of surgeries. Thank you for all of you for helping us with his treatment!
The first surgery is over, no he’s at the animal shelter again, and started to eat normally. It seems that he will even have a new owner soon!

That’s how he looked like when we took him in:

After the surgery:

Bori the boxer was also adopted. Her new family wanted to take her home Saturday morning after they visited the shelter, but as the boxer rescue team takes all boxers to their new homes by themselves, they had to wait... until Saturday evening! Bori can escort her new mommy to work, which means she will never be left home alone!

The new owners waited for her with a great enthusiasm:

We wish them a happy life together!

This week a new volunteer, Kinga wrote the blog of the mini shelter project:

“As I am not an experienced volunteer, sometimes I cannot help the visitors as I don’t know all the answers to their questions. So I usually prefer helping with the dogs. We water them, clean the kennels and at the end of the day we feed them. Sometimes I feel the day will never come to an end – there is so much to do and so few helping hands! It happens now and then that we cannot finish cleaning all the kennels. And what about taking the dogs for a walk, talking to them, playing with them, socializing them, making photos of them...? Of course, it is always a great pleasure to join the other volunteers, and to know that I had a part in making these creatures satisfied and happy. Nevertheless, I would be happier if more people came and joined the team. How wonderful it would be if we had time for all the tasks and could spend more time with socialization... There is, for example, an old female, Kenya, who would like to make friends a lot, but is so scared that she almost never comes out of the doghouse when foreign visitors are there...

Or Sztrapacska (Pastry), who seems a bit sad and tired nowadays. Even though still friendly and active, he’s more and more desperate, and not many people have been interested in adopting him...

It would be lovely to see that more and more people come and help every Saturday, just like we volunteers do. Earlier when I didn’t participate in any volunteer work and didn’t know the team that works in the mini shelter project, I always found a reason not to get up early and go to an animal home. It’s a weekend, I have to clean the flat, I have to take a rest, and I have a dog on my own to take care of... And then I met these people under the most horrible circumstances: I helped them in the rescue operation in Devecser, a village that was flooded by toxic waste in October 2010, and I saw all the work and effort these people make. Since then I spend every Saturday at the animal shelter, and I’m happy to be a part of this wonderful project! I smile every time I enter and greet the dogs that are especially close to me, and I wear that smile all day while working.”

It’s good news that no injured or sick bulldogs had to be taken in this week. It’s even better that Adrenalin, the stroppy French bulldog lady found a new home. We are sure she will have a good time with her new companions, two pinschers.

The animal shelter is open every day; every visitors are welcome. On Saturdays, our shop is also open – every little item you buy supports our residents!
